Canning & Dehydrating Food: My New Venture

Posted in Food Storage tagged , , , , , at 10:16 am by Dey's Cleaning

With our ever depleting economy, I have been doing a lot of research on food storage.

In my search, I’ve come across tons of videos on canning and dehydrating fresh fruits and vegetables.  As usual, some are great and some, well, continue your search…

Have to say that I am amazed at how easy they both ‘seem’ watching these women teach.  My most recently viewed video is making grape juice.  I just ordered two dozen canning jars ($16.98 each dozen) along with the steamer / juicer ($79.98) from Amazon.   The steamer/juicer was not the one I wanted, but was in my budget and it did have predominately positive reviews.  Total order with Super Saving Shipping (all items included shipping) came to $133.

By the way, the steamer/juicer I want was $160!!  Not at this time ;0

The jars I chose were the regular as opposed to the wide mouth.  Two reasons why the regular jars are okay for me right now:  1) My first attempt will be making juices which with the tube from the steamer/juicer the regular jars will be just fine.  When I’m ready to do the dehydrating that is when I’m sure the wide mouth jars will be needed.  2) the regular jars were Super Saving Shipping!!  The wide mouth jar shipping for two cases (24) was over $40!!!  Much more research on finding these jars locally is needed!  If I can help it, I’m NOT doubling my price for shipping.

Please check back from time to time.  I will be sharing with you my new venture through video and will be posting them here (started a new blog – Dey’s Foods) along with whatever recipe I am using pertaining to that video.

Stay tuned!

Clean As You Go

Posted in Dey's Tips at 7:20 am by Dey's Cleaning

Trying to keep up to cleaning chores can be just that, a chore.

Kids, work and other day-to-day responsibilities can make weekly chores overwhelming.   Struggling within yourself to ‘get it all done‘ is a feeling you don’t need and want to avoid.

One tried and true rule:  Clean as you go!

Small but time-saving habits adopted when you are finished each task will help in keeping your space straightened up and organized.   When you do have the time for those weekly chores, it’s only the cleaning that needs to be done.

Always have gloves, cleaning solutions and rags or paper towels under your kitchen and bathroom sinks.   For ‘touch-ups’ in the bathroom, here are some things you can do:

  • After brushing your teeth or shaving, wipe down the sink after each use.
  • At the end of the day, wipe down the toilet handle, seat, bowl top with a cleaning solution and rag.
  • Before going in to bed, put some cleaning solution in the toilet bowl, swish around the solution with the toilet brush and leave overnight.  Smells good and the day’s germs are gone with the next flush.

Feels good waking up to a clean and good smelling bathroom in the morning, doesn’t it?

Here are some ‘clean as you go’ kitchen tips:

  • Never go to bed with dishes in the sink!  You deserve to get up in the morning to an uncluttered kitchen sink and counter.  Gets the day started with no left-over mind clutter from the day before.  When you wobble in the kitchen desperately needing that first cup of coffee, you don’t want to have yesterdays dishes to climb over.
  • Clean the sink!  Another ‘feel good’ to meet you in the morning that will allow your day to get a clear-minded start.
  • Immediately, wipe up any spills on the floor.  Nothing worse than sticking to the floor with your every step that could be gone with one little swipe.

Most of us make things harder than they need to be but with the old-time saying, ‘clean as you go’, we can eliminate or at least lessen the daily little stresses in our lives.
